The 2016 vintage was early, about two weeks earlier than in 2015. It was dry and warm, bringing on even grape ripening and completely disease free. The wine-making went smoothly and the wines have come through well and are showing promising intensity of flavour. The reds have completed malolactic fermentation and are maturing in French oak barrels. The whites are in the final stages of preparation for bottling in late June. We will also bottle a Rioja-style Tempranillo for the first time.
McKellar Ridge Shiraz Viognier 2015
Due for release at the April Harvest Festival Brian and Janet Johnston’s shiraz-viognier showsthe exceptional fruity depth of Canberra’s 2015 vintage. Round, plush and seductive, the palate ripples with vibrant, ripe-berry flavours. Brian Johnston says he accentuated the fruit flavour by using more new French oak than usual, but reducing the time in oak by about five months. It’s a noticeable change amd one that worked deliciously in the outstanding 2015 season. The wine remailns medium –bodied and spicy in the Canberra mould with a special bouyancy and depth.
McKellar Ridge Pinot Noir 2014
Pinot Noir’s popularity in Australia rests mainly on the cool Australian and New Zealand regions making the cutting edge stuff and in the volume market, on Marlborough, New Zealand. Canberra winemakers love the variety too. Some grow it locally, while others prefer to bring grapes in from cooler Tumbarumba to out south. Brian and Janet Johnston’s version comes from the Pankhurst vineyard, Hall and Quarry Hill, Murrumbateman. The wine offers ripe varietal aromas and flavours on a medium-bodied palate, with drink-now soft tannins and smooth texture.
