Vintage 2014 has got under way at McKellar Ridge with the picking of sauvignon blanc and pinot noir grapes. The hot, dry spell we had in January and February required drip irrigation to be applied to the vines. This fortunately, protected them somewhat from heat stress and the fruit continued to develop well. The sauvignon blanc grapes were picked on February 27 from Shadow's Hill and Quarry Hill vineyards, about two weeks earlier than usual. They have very good tropical fruit character and we are intending to produce our second Cherie d'Amour style wine from them.
On the same day we also picked pinot noir grapes from Quarry Hill. A second batch, from Pankhurst vineyard, was picked on Saturday. March 1st. Again the grapes are in good condition, no diseases and nice fruit flavours of strawberry and cherry. We look foorward to showing you the progress of these wines if you are able to visit the cellar door in the coming weeks.
